Clean technology, or "cleantech," (synonymous to most people with "greentech") is new technology and/or related business models intended to provide solutions to global climate or resource challenges, or desire for energy independence, while offering competitive returns for customers and investors.
Cleantech represents a diverse range of products, services, and processes, all intended to:
- Provide superior performance at lower costs, while
- Reducing or eliminating negative ecological impact, at the same time as
- Making more efficient and responsible use of natural resources
The state of cleantech today
While once a high flying investment theme, cleantech suffered a crisis of confidence in the years 2010 to 2013. Eroded subsidies, general waning political support in key markets, macro-economic woes and underwhelming investor returns conspired against the fledgling cleantech space. However, as articulated in Kachan's recent report Cleantech Redefined: Why the next wave of cleantech infrastructure, technology and services will thrive in the twenty first century, a renaissance is occuring that is once again driving the market for clean technology products and services.
Cleantech, in Kachan's analysis, is now leaving the period of correction after the initial irrational exuberence common to many emerging technologies, and is now entering a period of growth marked by a general equalization of expectations and execution.
Cleantech industry taxonomy - September, 2012
The following is Kachan & Co.'s taxonomy of what industries constitute cleantech. Other taxonomies exist. But not all have accommodated latest innovation.
Why is a clean technology taxonomy important? As a list of nested categories, it shows where a clean technology “fits”. It helps vendors understand their competitive sets. It defines and helps investors understand the breadth of the theme, its industries and sub-categories, and helps research and data organizations report consistently.

First introduced in 2010 and updated in 2012, this categorization was informed by Kachan staff's years of writing thousands of clean technology articles and reports. Dozens of others’ frameworks were reviewed in our original work from 2010, with special acknowledgement to taxonomies from Cleantech Group, China Greentech Initiative, StrategyEye, Greentech Media, Skipso and Wikipedia, all of which informed our decisions.
